our family made time capsules.
We each took a box and
placed inside
things we thought
would be fun
to remember
in 10 years.
This week,
we opened them.
Boy how times have
changed
for our family.
And we knew they would.
But still.
Here are some of the
fun things we found:
.
A ribbon awarded
to the Shelley Gator of the Day!
.
.
A family tree....
.
.
Pokemon cards....
and a BYU football ticket
signed by #72.
I'll have to get into
the archives
to find out who that was...
.
.
We each had a section
of the newspaper--
now we know
what movies were showing,
who was nominated for a Grammy,
and what was happening in Y2K!
.
.
We each made a list of
things we wanted to remember
about ourselves,
and predictions
for the next ten years.
Some were right on,
others were really weird!
.
The funniest thing
we found?
In her box,
J found a brown bag
with slips of paper inside.
On each slip of paper
was an idea
for a way to solve a conflict
between our kids.
I must have come up
with this amazing idea
in desperation...
another one of those
parenting plans
that didn't work!
The idea was that
when there was a fight,
the kids had to choose
a slip out of the bag
and resolve their conflict
doing whatever the slip said.
Here they are:
- get arms tied together for however long mom thinks
- be grounded to each other for however long
- get arms tied together and have to stay together all day even in school year
- you can't talk so you have to solve your problem by writing notes to each other
- you can argue with each other as long as you can gargle at the same time
- mom chooses the reward for the person who gets attacked
- get hog-tied together
- touch noses with each other and you can't laugh
- sit on each other's laps for 5 minutes each
- wear each other's shoes and hairstyles--even mom and dad
- sit in chairs back to back tied up for 10 minutes.
- grounded in the same room as each other
- every time you call each other a name you owe them 5 cents
- ya hafe ta doa hanshack wale ya takabout yr problem
- whoever can gargle the longest without stopping wins
- give twenty bucks to them
- go outside and stand on your heads until your problem is solved
- touch noses while you talk about it
- hug and tell each other while looking into their eyes, "I'm so sorry, will you please forgive me."

There were some tender ones too..
like handmade cards
from elementary schoolers...
.
And messages from folks
who aren't with us anymore.
Such great memories...
Makes me wonder
where we'll be in 2020...
